Dr. Allen Holder's areas of expertise and research are in optimization and mathematical programming and their applications in medicine, medical physics, biology, and economics. He has research affiliations with the Indiana University School of Medicine, the Cancer Therapy Research Center in San Antonio, and the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City. Dr. Holder is involved in cross-disciplinary research with biology and chemistry faculty, and helped establish a new major in biomathematics. He also worked with fellow math professor Dr. Yosi Shibberu to develop the fastest algorithm at the time for protein analysis, enabling researchers to do in minutes what had previously taken days. Dr. Holder has directed nearly 50 undergraduate research projects, is the editor of several publications, and has received the Board of Trustees Outstanding Scholar Award.
