Research Opportunities

The Computer Science & Software Engineering Department (CSSE) provides students with various pathways to engage in research from their first year through to their senior thesis. Through a carefully designed series of courses, students can explore multiple research methodologies and topics, laying a solid foundation for their academic and professional careers.

Curriculum Pathways for Research

CSSE students have several opportunities to start research as early as their first year on campus. Our approved series of courses was designed to give students several options to conduct meaningful research in different ways. Learn more about CSSE’s pathways to research.

Opportunities for Research

CSSE faculty are actively conducting research on topics that include algorithmic game theory, human-computer interaction, computer models of biological phenomena, socio-technical security and privacy, and many other subjects. Students are encouraged to work with faculty and become involved with these opportunities. Learn more about what CSSE faculty are researching.

Student Research Spotlights

Students culminate their academic career with their research capstone project, which they present at the CSSE Research Symposium in May. The event features student and team presentations, a keynote address from a visiting scholar, and alumni presentations on various technical topics. For many students, these projects will be part of future international conferences and academic journals and this event is the first step toward a possible research-based career.

Alumni Conducting Research

CSSE students have opportunities to publish papers and form connections with faculty, which lead to strong letters of recommendation for graduate school. Several Rose alumni are enrolled in research programs at institutions such as Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, and Northwestern.
