Test your skills at the annual Â鶻¾«Æ· Mathematics Contest on the second Saturday in November.

Each school may enter four students from each of grade, as well as an unlimited number of alternates. Team awards will be presented on the basis of the performance of the preselected team members, and alternates will be eligible for individual awards.

About the contest:

The contest consists of 20 multiple choice questions. Five points are awarded for a correct answer, and a one point penalty is assessed for an incorrect answer. Individual awards will be given for the top 12 scores in each year. There also will be three class awards for each grade level. Lastly, awards will be given to the top scoring male and female freshman and sophomores.

The  program is targeted at middle school and is a year-long program. During the Fall term, students meet with their MATHCOUNTS coach on a regular basis. In the Spring term, there are school, regional, state and national competitions. Rose-Hulman hosts the regional competitions and the state competition recently. The American Regional Mathematics League (ARML) holds an annual competition in June, at three different sites, in which various regional teams compete. The Rose-Hulman contact is John Rickert.

The (GAIM) is a national team-based competition that occurs in the spring. This competition presents challenging and innovative math problems to students in this age group, contextualized in a comic book containing the stories of pioneering women from history. 

About the contest:

The competition occurs in two rounds. Round 1 is sixty minutes and consists of 16 questions designed to challenge the way teams think about problems and to encourage creative problem-solving. Round 2 is twenty minutes and is more of a research-type problem. Between rounds, competitors enjoy participating in several strategy-based games. Teams of four students from the same school compete in one of two divisions: Upper Elementary for grades 3-5 and Middle School for grades 6-8. 

Medals are awarded to a percentage of the top placing teams. the co-organizers are Leanne Holder from Rose-Hulman and Bob Fischer from Honey Creek Middle School.
