Sutterer Honored for Civil Engineering Career Success
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Head Kevin Sutterer has been inducted into the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Academy of Civil Engineering. The recognition honors alumni for their many professional achievements, featuring career and personal successes.
Sutterer has been a member of the Rose-Hulman faculty for 21 years and led the institute’s civil and environmental engineering area since 2009. He teaches courses in geology as well as geotechnical and transportation engineering, and is an advocate for open-ended project-based learning, curriculum development and learning through case studies.
Under Sutterer’s guidance, Rose-Hulman’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty have been proponents of engineering ethics and teaching ethical decision making. The department received the Walter LeFevre Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2017 for exemplary promotion of licensure, ethics education and professionalism in engineering education.
In 2018, Sutterer received the American Society for Engineering Education’s George K. Wadlin Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding service in support of civil engineering education and the civil engineering profession. He chaired ASEE’s civil engineering division from 2010-11 after serving as director from 2005-09, and serves as an evaluator and consultant for civil engineering programs being reviewed by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Sutterer was named Young Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1996, earned regional Outstanding Faculty Advisor by ASCE in 2008, and was recognized on the Council of Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni at Georgia Institute of Technology.
His research interests include waste utilization in structural fills, seismic stability of earth structures, geosynthetics, ground modification and geotechnical construction. He is a registered professional engineer and has worked as a consultant in most areas of geotechnical engineering.
Sutterer earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1982 and 1984, respectively. He also earned a master’s degree from Purdue University and a doctorate from Georgia Tech.
